News flash: the average adult uses about nine personal care products a day, most of them laden with harmful chemicals known to cause serious health problems. And of the more than 10,500 industrial chemicals hidden in everything from shampoo and deodorant to perfume and cosmetics, about 89 percent have not been evaluated for safety.i Now for the good news: there’s an app for that.
Think Dirty® is a free mobile app for your iPhone® that lets you scan any product in your bathroom vanity or cosmetic case (or at the store, before you add it to your basket) to find out just how “clean” or “dirty” it really is. Just snap a pic of the bar code and the app provides an easy-to-understand readout of the ingredients it contains and their potential health impacts using a rating scale of zero to 10 (zero being the least toxic and 10 indicating a serious threat to your health).
The Think Dirty database includes more than 105,000 products and uses information from international government warning lists, clinical studies, and data provided by non-profit health and science agencies—but what happens if you find a rogue mascara or lotion that’s not on the list? Simply snap a photo and send them some information about the product, and the folks at Think Dirty will investigate and add your product to the list.
Using the app, you can also keep track of the good guys and the bad guys by creating and saving your own “safe” shopping list. How cool is that? Download the app today!
