Detox: 101 — 5 Ways Love Your Liver!

Did you know the word “liver” comes from an Old English word for “life”? That’s because the length and quality of your life are linked to the healthy function of your liver. Every day this amazing organ manufactures roughly 13,000 chemicals, maintains 2,000 enzyme systems, filters 100 gallons of blood, and produces about a quart of bile to assist with digestion. And because the liver is responsible for cleaning the blood that nourishes the rest of the body, a weak or overburdened liver affects every other organ and system of the body.

If your liver is not functioning to full capacity—often referred to as a sluggish liver—it can impact your central nervous system, your digestive system, your endocrine system, your reproductive system, your cardiovascular system and more. The good news is there are simple things you can do every day to promote healthy liver function—like these five tips below!

  1. Go Organic. So many foods today are contaminated with pesticides, chemical additives, and even growth hormones and antibiotics—all of which put added stress on your liver. Opt for fresh, organic foods whenever possible, including meats from organically raised, grass-fed animals.
  2. Avoid Saturated Fats, Trans Fats and Sugar. The Standard American Diet (or SAD) is loaded with heavily processed, high-fat and high-sugar foods that can take a serious toll on the health of your liver. Instead, add more low-sugar fruits, non-starchy vegetables, lean protein sources and beneficial Omega-3s to your daily diet.
  3. Limit Your Alcohol Intake. Alcohol can damage liver cells and cause inflammation of the liver, eventually leading to cirrhosis and liver disease. While it’s best to avoid alcoholic beverages altogether, make it a point to be aware of how often and how much you drink, and limit alcohol consumption as much as possible.
  4. Cleanse & Detox Regularly. As the body’s primary detox organ, the liver requires specific nutrients to be effective. In addition to frequent total-body cleansing, many people benefit from using an herbal liver cleansing formula that contains a blend of herbs, antioxidants and nutraceuticals used traditionally to support healthy liver function.‡
  5. Exercise. Belly fat and liver fat often go hand in hand. In fact, fat from the liver can be sent to the belly, and vice versa—eventually increasing the risk of developing fatty liver disease. Regular exercise (at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) has been shown to support healthy liver function by stimulating blood and lymphatic circulation, which in turn helps eliminate toxins from the body and reduce the risk of obesity-related liver damage.
